U NEVER KNOW.......

"Roo" has been at the trainers for 10 days, we were having some tweaking done on his roping. Hubby is wanting to team rope off of him and just needed a few adjustments. Well today was the day to go and pick him up. The trainer, him and his family are great friends of ours, we were talking this morning and he was saying he really needed to do alot of tracking off of "Roo." I told him we have been looking for a donkey to use for tracking, just haven't found one yet. Okay he says, we sat up a time and I headed that way. I pull into his driveway and he is leading a horse and a donkey. He walks by hands me the lead to the donkey and goes and ties up the other horse. Next thing I know he is coming with "Roo." He then asks me who I want to load first! What?!?!

What in the world is this?? Go to the trainer's to pick up your horse and come home with a donkey to boot!! He told me after we talked that they were not using this donkey anymore (they have a pony and another donkey they use) and he was fixing to haul this one to the sale. So he gave us the donkey! Woo Hoo! I'm so excited!! I've been wanting one to use for tracking as well on "Angel."

Nosey guys! As soon as I pulled up at the house, every horse looked up and knew something different was there! I walked up to the big gate to our pasture and let them check him out and do there prancing and things. "Preacher" was VERY interested and intrigued by what it was!

His name is "Pedro." He loves to have this spot on his head rubbed! He needs a good brushing and bath, nothing some TLC won't fix! Oh ya, hubby called when I was leaving Jim's and asked how "Roo" was. I said fine, he said what is it? I told him I don't know what you are talking about! He said I know you and Jim too well, what is going on!!! LOL! I told him and he was fine about it! Good thing since I had already left with donkey in tow! He already wants to change his name to "Homer!" Little cowgirl is going to be SO excited when she finds out!

I didn't turn him out with the horses yet, he is going to spend a few days in the lot. Let the horses get used to him. They ran him with there horses and never had a problem! I can say he doesn't like "Shelby" She went into the lot with me and he promptly ran her out! She was just staring at me, Like what did I do!!!

Awww, he's adorable!!! Too cool! Savannah's going to LOVE him!!
Mine likes it if you put your hands in his ears and rub. Don't know if they all do, and it's kinda gross, but mine just about lays down for it.
I love donkeys :) He is a handsome one!

Oh Gosh! He is so cute! Just too cute! I want a donkey too. I've been told that they actually kill coyotes and we have such a coyote problem! To cute!

We have 4 donkeys. We really enjoy them, they usually run with the horses and we have had no problems. Right know they are in their own pens, because of the babies.

Awww...he's a cutie!! That's how we ended up with the "Badonkadonk". Her and her son, Burrito(love that name) came as tracking donkeys and she ended up staying. She's like Mikey's donk-she loves to have you stroke her ears. Burrito was given to another roper and his kids ride him everywhere. They said he was better than any pony they had ever had for them.

Something tells me Savannah is gonna have little Pedro riding in no time.;)

BECG-That was the first question out of her mouth! You know mom you are going to have to warm him up for me! LOL! I said I don't know if we're going to ride him or not! What she says! So I see in my future seeing if he is broke for riding or not! :)

Way to go! I've been wanting a donkey for Mickey as a friend. He is so lonely since I sold Cash. Watch Shelby, donks get very protective of "their" place, horses, people.ect. they hate coyotes and dogs they don't know. I had a friend that had a pair and the jack would kill any stray dog that came in his pasture. He wouldn't bother her dogs after he learned that they belong there. So tell Shelby to be careful.

Our 2 horses were trained for roping by starting on a burro named "Leroy." Leroy loves it...he knows just how fast to go and exactly where to run and if it takes too long to get started, he runs over to bite the rope horse.

OK, he's just TOO cute! But what is tracking? Remember me, I'm the silly breeder and show ring queen who knows nothing about working horse stuff. LOL

I just knew I had posted on this. I must be going crazy! Everyone needs a donkey. Mine are so sweet. Love 'em!

Lookin' forward to seein' ya this weekend. Little worried about the rodeo. I haven't rode in awhile. Just hope I don't kill myself! Cause as we all know, I am prone to injury! LOL

Yay! you got a donkey! When we buy a place I am going to get one to keep Beamer company. I love them! They have such personalities. I kept a mare at a friends place for a while; she has a donkey called Trouble that just fell in love with my mare. The first time her saw her without her winter blanket on he he-hawed up a storm!

I'm with Rising Rainbow, what is tracking? Heis so cute and you will have a blast with him! We had one that we could ride when I was a kid and she was so good! Glad this one is going to be living with you guys and have a forever home. (They get passed around a lot for some reason) Will be looking forward to some really good stories about this one!!

Rising Rainbow & Midlife Mom: Tracking is what you want a rope horse to do, track a cow, etc. Cows won't last, but donkeys you can track and rope and they just keep going! The idea with tracking is to get the horse to be at a certain place and then rope. It is a good thing to practice with all your rope horses. Donkeys are great also if you have a horse that wants to get to close, because normally they will kick at them and get the horses back where they need to be. There is alot that goes into a rope horse. Just like everything else you do, there are many parts and then they come together and looks so easy.

And of course I have to find out if this donkey is broke because little cowgirl is dying to ride him! Great now I'm a donkey trainer as well! LOL! :)

DO NOT let it in with your horses! He will chew their tails!! I know we have a little girl donkey. My horses tail still hasn't grown back! And she is mean! We have had her since she was a couple months old, so no one has abused her. My Cowboy just started ropin her , so that's not it either. She bit my youngest and left a bruise! She treis to stop you if you turn your back on her. She is a bad donkey. We have her in with our steers, she bites all of them! She needs a muzzel!! Yours is probably a good donkey!

Paige said...

Huh, we have two donkeys and they never thought of chewing tails---hell, they do not do anything, not even chase coyotes like they are supposed to do.

But I love them, they are so funny, and so affectionate

Aww, what a cutie! It is great he just gave him to you! ;) Sounds like you'll be able to do some good cow trackin' work now!

WOOOOO HOOOOOO a donkey :) I LOVE THEM!!! i only have 11 {sigh} but maybe more after this breeding season ;)

Pedro is SO CUTE. i like Homer better though... donkeys can sure be ridden, i have a couple of friends with riding mammoths... but Pedro should be a fine size for your little cowgirl...

watch the dog, donks can be very protective of their space. even my month-old foals were chasing our dogs out of their pen! all of our dogs have learned to keep one eye on the donks when they are "snacking" on their "veggies" {hey equine poop is just processed grass lol}

all of mine LOV their ears rubbed, i bend my finger and use my knuckle so i don't get ear wax under my fingernails... i'd rather clean a sheath than have earwax yuck!

if you have never had a donkey before you will find that they have the BEST personalities...

hhmmm trainwreck you might have someone talk to her, that does NOT sound normal to me and i have known quite a few donkeys...

congratulations KD!!!!!!!
